Blueberries are often referred to as superfood. They contain lots of C-, K- and E-vitamins, minerals (for example manganese, copper), fiber and antioxidants (e.g. anthocyanins). Blueberry’s nutrients boost the immune system and prevent infections. They are also low in fat and calories, 100 grams contains less than 50 calories. And this is the wild blueberries we’re talking about not highbush blueberries which are much poorer in nutrition.
Blueberries are good for your heart, lowering high blood pressure and managing diabetes. The antioxidants (anthocyanins) that help protect cells against free radical damage decrease inflammation and tumor growth and can therefore help prevent cancer as well as upset stomach and flues. There are also many benefits for brain including curing and preventing various diseases, improving memory, motor skills and learning capacity.
Blueberries are also good for the skin and eyes. C-vitamin is important for our collagen production that fights the damage caused by the sun and pollution. Collagen improves skin’s overall health and texture and makes it smoother and softer. Antioxidants slow down (age-related) visual loss and help with other eye problems like dryness and infections.
This season was great blueberry-wise. The warm, long fall last year and mild winter provided good conditions for blueberries to bloom and the humid, cool summer helped them grow. We picked tens of liters of blueberries these past weeks and will freeze them and enjoy them during the dark northern fall and winter months. Research has shown that freezing blueberries doesn’t harm its nutrients and makes them great almost all year round. The best thing is that they are free and just waiting in the forests to be picked up.
I try to eat blueberries multiple times a week and my favorites are blueberry pie, blueberry oatmeal, natural yogurt with blueberries, blueberry smoothies and blueberry-chia pudding :d
